What's Happening in the World of NCCF

The NoCoast Weightlifting Club is small but powerful - just like Kandi, who is our April Athlete of the Month. Kandi started lifting with our Oly Club last summer and has been a force on the platform and in our CrossFit classes ever since. Within the past 12 months Kandi has racked up victories at the Rocky Mountain State Games, Roots summer and fall meets, Front Range fall meet, as well as a 2nd place at Master’s Nationals in in Savannah, GA. This year Kandi has her sights set high as she is training to get back to the American Open this December. In the short time she has been with us, Kandi has h...

With all the hype about the Crossfit Open, you are probably asking yourself, “Should I sign up for the Open?” I found myself asking the same thing last February. I was hearing all about this competition, but I was just finishing my six months of Crossfit, and I had never dreamed of competing in Crossfit events, much less being able to qualify for anything. Then I started hearing our gym’s plan for running the Open workouts and how many people were going to be involved! After that, I started hearing about the scaled options for the workouts. It finally dawned on me that I was going to end up doing al...

It’s that time of year again NoCoasters, the CrossFit Games Open season is upon us!

If you haven’t heard of the CrossFit Open, here’s a few things you need to know…

  1. This is a worldwide online competition. There was about 250,000 participants last year; everyone is welcome!

  2. You are able to compete against friends and family across the country/globe, as well as everyone at NoCoast.

  3. The Open starts on February 25th and last 5 weeks. Each week, a different workout is announced on Thursday evening at 6pm and you have until Monday evening at 6pm to do the workout and submit your score to the C...

Brett Luna started at NoCoast in 2015, and we are excited to ring in the New Year with him! He is loaded with a good amount of athleticism as it is. That's clear when you see him do endurance workouts. But, Brett doesn't hang out in any kind of comfort zone. He pushes his limits and expectations without much hesitation. Since coming to NoCoast, he's tackled anything that comes his way, most notably the Oly lifts. He ended 2015 with a bang by competing in the Alpine CrossFit Holiday Weightlifting Meet. We are convinced nothing can stop Brett from accomplishing what he wants. We look forward to 2016!

When Sara started at NoCoast, we were excited about all the potential she packed. She moves very well, is coachable, and despite what she might think or say, very athletic! It's a treat for us, as coaches, to watch an athlete come in with a pretty solid foundation to build on. Then it's all about stacking up skills, gains, and finding mental strength and confidence in the gym. She did our first Friday Night Fights last year, did awesome in the CrossFit Open, participated in the Ragnar Relay Race with NoCoast friends, and recently competed with some gym buddies at Girls Gone RX. Sa...

Give me another inch. A little more. Get Lower! Any of these cues sound familiar? If so, we need to talk!

Squatting is one of the most important movements any human can perform and one of the main movements our program is based around. The squat is the quintessential functional movement necessary for life; in and outside of the gym!

We squat every time go to the bathroom, sit down for dinner, or get low to move an object. Do you have back, hip, knee, or ankle dysfunctions? Some form of squat is most likely part of a good therapy program. The strength and flexibility developed from squatting allows you...

It's an awesome feeling to get yourself up and over those rings. Muscle ups make me feel like I can fly. These are my absolute favorite thing to do at the gym. As much as I love them, I've struggled with how to explain how I do them. See, this is how I learned how to do a muscle up:

1. Watch videos online.

2. Buy some rings since the gym on base doesn't have them.

3. Try to get a muscle up.

4. Try again.

5. Try lots of times everytime I come to the gym. (Make music on my Nano loud to distract from all the people looking at me like they are going to call the cops soon if I don't stop.)

6. Do 30 muscle...

One of our go-to definitions for CrossFit is constantly varied, functional movements, done at high intensity. These three components are equally important to the success of any individual. Variance and functional movements are two pieces that we include in every athlete’s program from day one. Intensity, on the other hand, is something that must be managed and gradually introduced and increased as newer athletes learn functional movements and become more consistent with them.

Intensity is CrossFit’s “special sauce,” it’s what makes our program successful. Too little and you stall results. Too much an...

We’ve all experienced muscle pain up to several days after exercise from Crossfit; it’s a normal response and there is an explanation!  It is called Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS), which is a phenomenon that occurs 2-5 days after exercise from more eccentric (lengthening of the muscle) movements.  DOMS occurs from small microscopic tears that occur to the muscle fibers.  This is a normal response after exercise and can help build up muscle hypertrophy, increase stamina, and help with muscle recovery as you increase load/resistance.

Muscle pain or fatigue should go away after a few day...

You may have noticed the many benefits of CrossFit. The most obvious is increased work capacity. You’ve probably also noticed that you’re getting leaner, stronger, and maybe even losing some weight. Life as you know it or new it has changed. Your hard work at the gym has turned into healthy eating at home, athletic activities outside the gym, and better relationships with your friends and family. The combination of working out, eating better, and surrounding yourself in a community that’s helping and supporting each other is a huge key to success.

You may have also noticed the adaptation happening...
