Athlete of the Month: Amy R.

Amy came to NoCoast a little shy and a little unsure of herself. We've been happy to see her grow on so many levels. She's been able to recognize her own strengths and I believe has surprised herself. We always knew she was stronger and more capable than she knew. But, it's been awesome seeing her meet her own power so many times in the gym. And not just with weights and workouts, but also with nutrition and general lifestyle changes. She's come a long way in a short time! And she is now a recently graduated nurse. So the year of 31 will be the best yet, for Amy, we are sure.

Age/Weight: 30/135 How long have you been CrossFitting?

2 years

Athletic/Sports history/highlights: I played basketball and volleyball throughout high school and started running in college. I also grew up waterskiing and my first job was as a wakeboard instructor, so all water sports are a summertime staple.

How did you get into CrossFit? My sister-in-law and I were basically sick of running, so we dropped in at a nearby box. I never stopped going after that. What is your favorite WOD/CrossFit movement? Rope climbs and overhead squats. What is your least favorite WOD/CrossFit movement? Push-ups and thrusters punish me. Double unders make me internally rage. What is your most memorable CrossFit moment? Either my first successful box jump or recently competing in Girls Gone RX. I watched the competition in awe last year and thought that I would never be able to do the things the ladies doing. Being able to complete that competition a year later was a good feeling. How does nutrition play a role in your fitness and recovery?

Nutrition plays a substantial role in my fitness. When I started Crossfit, I'd been a vegetarian for 14 years and relied on diet soda for everything. I've since given up diet soda and realized that protein is a vital component to this type of lifestyle. I try not to obsessively focus on food though, I just know I feel better when I feed myself well.

How has CrossFit improved your overall wellness? Before I started Crossfit, I was scary skinny and my brother had said he missed having a strong sister. Those words stuck with me so I put in all I have trusting that I will see results. It has happened little by little and I'm starting to feel like a strong, healthy woman. I can do movements and pick up weight I never thought were within my reach. On a day to day level, I don't tire easily and I don't need help moving stuff around the house and those things are really nice too.

Advice to new people:

Prioritize quality. Push yourself and celebrate the small stuff. Not everyday will be your best day and that's okay. Just keep trying and know that everyone here is on a similar journey. Show up and you will have the support of the Nocoast community.
