Katie is the definition of tiny but mighty. She is small, but full of power! She is a great morning athlete. Since coming to NoCoast, we've seen her just become more proficient, build more strength, and find herself being a bit more competitive. Plus she's hilarious. And we all know humor is necessary at 6:00 in the morning at the gym. Most don't know this woman has TEN kids! We just think that's an amazing feat in itself. She is as consistent as they come, and has a lot going on. We had to hear more about how she does it! Her answer is humble. We still think you're amazing, Katie!
How long have you been CrossFitting?
I wrestled in high school and ran cross country slowly. In 1998, I won the state championship in women's wrestling. While that sounds super impressive, it means that I beat the other girl in my weight class.
How did you get into CrossFit?
My friend, Annie Powell, recommended NoCoast. I had joined a Crossfit gym before, but it was not a good fit for me and I didn't stick with it for very long.
What is your favorite WOD/CrossFit movement?
I like box jumps and burpees.
What is your least favorite WOD/CrossFit movement?
That stupid airdyne is the bane of my existence.
What is your most memorable CrossFit moment?
I don't have any moment where I think, "Hey, I am killing this." However, I have had numerous moments where I lift heavier weights than I lifted before or I can do the workout without having to take a break or I can do the workout as prescribed and it feels really good.
How has CrossFit improved your overall wellness?
I sleep better and manage stress better. I want to eat better and treat my body well. Because I feel better in general, I have more energy, am more patient with my family, and have better balance in my days.
We know you have a big family. How many kids do you have, and how do you commit to getting to the gym regularly?
We have ten kids, three daughter and seven sons. My feeling is that there is no human over the age of 11 who thinks, "Man, I just have so much free time. Wish I had more to do." That is no one's reality. For me, I wake up early and get my workout in before the day starts for my family. The hardest part is not hitting snooze on the alarm. Once my feet hit the floor, I am committed for the day. It took me many false starts to get to that point, but I feel so much better after I work out that I keep coming back.
Advice to new people:
Just keep showing up. Everyone starts somewhere and the community is so encouraging and willing to meet you where you are.
