March Athlete of the Month: Andy L.

We love seeing all types of athletes progress and change in the gym. But there is something quite remarkable about seeing a parent who sets an example to their kids. Even better, is when there are two parents who do it together. Andy has come alongside his wife, Brooke, and they have set themselves as a priority. In doing that, they've become the role models: they eat well, they work hard in and out of the gym, and they play hard. And sometimes that means long nights shuttling their two girls around. Or meal prepping and planning, to fuel their family well. And coming to gym at times that may not be their favorite. But it is really paying off. Andy won the Nutrition Challenge, losing 7 inches and 11.2 pounds! He's improved as an athlete, and it's noticeable. The gift of health is one to be shared, and there is something special about seeing a family reap the benefits together.

Age/Weight: 37/205

How long have you been CrossFitting?

About 1 year-I started in 2013 and went for 6 months, then rested for 3 years…started at NoCoast last September and have been hooked since

Athletic/Sports history/highlights:

Played basketball, football, & baseball through high school and played baseball in college.

Best highlight from back in the day was hitting the game winning home run to win our 2nd state baseball championship. Nowadays, I stick to golf & fishing and the best highlights come from watching our daughters compete in volleyball, softball, and gymnastics.

How did you get into CrossFit?

I drove by a CrossFit gym and saw people in the parking lot flipping giant tires and wanted to check it out. My wifey, Brooke, was my real motivation to get started this time round. I love her and her drive, but hate that she front squats more than me….

What is your favorite WOD/CrossFit movement?

Toes to bar- I couldn't do one last September. Hit 21 max reps a couple weeks ago and it made me feel like I was Rich Froning (without the bald spot)

What is your least favorite WOD/CrossFit movement?

Any WOD or movement that requires a front rack. The struggle is real and it reminds me I am definitely not Rich Froning

What is your most memorable CrossFit moment?

My first rope climb. Made it to the top then realized I didn't really know how to get down correctly

How does nutrition play a role in your fitness and recovery?

Our whole family is very active in sports so eating well has become a top priority at home.

Completing Leah’s challenge in January was an absolute eye-opener and we realized the impact diet/nutrition has. If you want to be crushin’ some WODs you better be crushin’ some good food

How has CrossFit improved your overall wellness?

I eat better, sleep better, feel better, have more energy, lost weight, gained strength, improved flexibility, I could keep going…..just ALL AROUND BETTER!

How has CrossFit changed your family?

At home, it has made fitness and nutrition a daily focus. At the gym, our family has grown larger as NoCoast fast became family! Can’t say enough about the coaches and the really cool community atmosphere they’ve created- it’s great being a part of it. You can really feel the love when you are curled up in a ball on the floor and you see the coach has a smile on their face. You only get that kind of love from family!

Advice to new people:

Show up to CrossFit with a positive attitude knowing you’re going to put in some work and you’ll go home knowing your stronger/better today than you were yesterday. That’s what it’s all about for me.
