September Athlete of the Month: Lisa Zwiers

Congratulations Lisa, you are the September NoCoast Athlete of the Month!

Lisa and Doug have been a part of the NoCoast community for 2 years and through consistent training and nutrition, they’ve both found huge amounts of success in their health and fitness. Lisa’s strength improvements and accomplishments have been one after the other in the past year, getting her first rope climb, pull up, toes to bar, and getting more consistent with her double unders and Olympic lifts. Lisa’s confidence in all aspects of fitness has skyrocketed and she even competed in her first team competition at the end of last month. Congratulations on all of your hard work and success, Lisa, it is well deserved!

Quotes from Lisa:

“I joined the Whole 30 program at the gym 2 years ago. We have been following the Whole 30 at home with a few exceptions. I lost 15 pounds and have been able to increase my days at the gym from 3 to 5 per week. I've found I have improved energy (I no longer feel like I need a nap at 2pm) and less muscle soreness.”

“I think it speaks volumes that at 55 years old you can lose weight and get stronger. Doug and I were in Telluride recently and would go on two long and steep hikes a day. I told him I thought we were on vacation! Historically, we have been more sedentary when away from home.”

Age/Weight:

55/117 lbs

Athletic/Sports history/highlights:

I was a high school and college cheerleader at University of Nebraska - Lincoln. I used to be able to sprint. When you are running the Husker football team onto the field, you don't mess around!

How long have you been CrossFitting?

5 years.

How did you get into CrossFit?

I joined a program called Alpha at Lifetime Fitness. Doug came to a class and informed me I was doing CrossFit

What is your favorite WOD/CrossFit movement?

The burpee (I'm close to the ground).

What is your least favorite WOD/CrossFit movement?

Falling off equipment. Heidi was coaching the day I lost my grip and flew off the pull up bar. I have never seen an uglier bruise!

What is your most memorable CrossFit moment?

May 7th, 2022, I climbed the rope. This has been a goal of mine for the past year.

How does nutrition play a role in your fitness and recovery?

I joined the Whole 30 program at the gym 2 years ago. We have been following the Whole 30 at home with a few exceptions. I lost 15 pounds and have been able to increase my days at the gym from 3 to 5 per week. I've found I have improved energy (I no longer feel like I need a nap at 2pm) and less muscle soreness. I wanted to improve my muscularity and having the energy to go to class 5 days a week has made a significant difference.

How has CrossFit improved your overall wellness?

I think it speaks volumes that at 55 years old you can lose weight and get stronger. Doug and I were in Telluride recently and would go on two long and steep hikes a day. I told him I thought we were on vacation! Historically, we have been more sedentary when away from home. This past weekend Sharon, Deb, and I competed in the Fossil Games. This was such a fun event and great to spend with two people that have similar goals! We came in third, had a great time together, and pushed hard.

How has CrossFit changed your family?

CrossFit is something "fun" my husband Doug and I do together. Many other couples don't understand, haha. I hope that my sons continue to exercise and have good nutrition from our example at home.

Advice to new people:

My advice to a new member is to set goals, as it's easy to become overwhelmed. I would also recommend attending a nutrition class. Exercise and nutrition are equally important.
